The Cottage

A traditional 2-bedroom cottage on the Isle of Lewis, sleeping up to 4 guests. It is tastefully decorated with locally inspired touches, including Harris Tweed curtains and artwork reflecting the area's rich weaving heritage. The living room is the perfect place to unwind, with a cosy multi-fuel stove or central heating to keep you warm. The kitchen is well equipped, with an induction hob and oven for preparing meals with fresh, locally sourced produce, and there is ample parking for 3 to 4 cars. A peaceful base for exploring the Outer Hebrides.

Murdo M. Macleod

The cottage belongs to retired sea Captain Murdo M. Macleod, whose family have called the Isle of Lewis home for generations. Through a long maritime career he held command of the renowned luxury cruise ship M.V. Hebridean Princess, so he knows what good service means, and you will find the cottage shipshape in all respects. A true Highlander at heart, Murdo is an accomplished bagpiper, a keen hiker and an amateur fisherman who has spent much of his life exploring the islands. From April to September he is happy to be booked for guided walks, fishing trips, and bagpipe talks and demonstrations.

Carol-Ann Peacock

Carol-Ann Peacock is a photographer whose work includes the images that accompany Donald S Murray's prose and poems in the book Weaving Songs. She shares Murdo's love of the island and its light, and together they look after the cottage and welcome guests. Ask her about the best beaches, the wildlife, and where the light falls at the end of the day.

The light here changes everything, hour by hour.

The setting

Set in a tranquil rural spot, the cottage looks north to the historic Dun Carloway Broch, visible from the living-room window, and south to the mountains of Harris. The area is rich in wildlife, and it is not uncommon to see golden eagles and other birds of prey from the property. The nearest beach, Dalmore, is 4 miles away (an 8-minute drive), and Dailbeag is 5 miles away (a 9-minute drive). The Callanish Standing Stones are one of the island's great sights, and a well-stocked community shop is half a mile away for essentials and local delicacies.

The island is made for dogs. Empty beaches to run along, miles of moorland to explore, and a warm hearth to dry off beside when the weather turns. Your dog is as welcome here as you are.

Finding the cottage

Where we are

Taigh Tuaram sits on the west side of Lewis, near the Dun Carloway broch and a short drive from the Callanish standing stones. Reach the island by ferry to Stornoway or by air. Driving from Stornoway, head for the cottage via Achmore and Garynahine; sat-navs often route across the Pentland road, which reaches us too but is slower.
